New Chamber Board Begins Reorganization

Date: 3/24/2009

Directors meet to develop strategy for improved business services

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ROCHELLE, IL…The Board of Directors of the new Rochelle Area Chamber of Commerce met for the first time to chart a new course for the future of the 70 year-old organization. According to articles of incorporation dated August 1, 1939, the Rochelle Chamber was formed to “promote business in and for the general welfare of the City of Rochelle through programs, advertising, entertainment and good fellowship among its members; and to strive for the betterment of the community both socially and economically”.

New leadership has been established that will focus on improving business retention, accelerating new commercial and retail recruitment, and offering progressive workforce development programs. The group will be led by Chairman Geri Henkel, Vice-Chairman Doug Creason, and Treasurer Ross Freier. Jim Beardin, former Chamber President will serve as an ex-officio member of the Executive Committee. Rochelle City Clerk Bruce McKinney will act as Recording Secretary. Additional Directors include Jamie Craven, Tim Hayden, Dan Vinyard, and Dan Williams.

“The Board of Directors is committed to continuing the Chamber’s 70-year legacy as a membership-based organization focused on serving our member businesses and the community”, said Chairman Geri Henkel. “As we plan for the future, input and involvement from Rochelle business owners is invaluable”, Henkel added.

Monday night the Rochelle City Council approved an unprecedented agreement with the Chamber which provides for the services of an Executive Director to lead the ground-breaking organization which will incorporate economic development services never before offered through the Chamber. Peggy Friday, Commercial and Retail Development Coordinator for the City of Rochelle will assume the responsibilities of Director/CEO on May 1, 2009 and will be on loan to the Chamber. This partnership between the Chamber and the City is a critical component to making the Chamber a more effective organization. It will allow the Chamber to have the resources its needs to further expand its services and remain viable for many years to come. The Chamber Board of Directors unanimously approved the contract at its March 17 meeting, pending the Council’s final authorization. Friday will report directly to this new Chamber Board. The City will have no involvement in the operations of the Chamber.

“The Rochelle Area Chamber of Commerce is excited to be working with Peggy Friday as our Executive Director. Peggy shares our vision for positive growth and interaction with the business community and her experience will allow us to hit the ground running”, Henkel said.

The Board’s first priority is to evaluate existing programs and provide new and expanded services to its members and the entire business community. The Chamber is encouraging area businesses to provide input to Friday or the Board. Member meetings will be scheduled in the future to unveil programs and services that will be offered

The Chamber of Commerce is the nation’s premier trade association and a strong advocate for growth and prosperity in America.
