Rochelle, Ill. –The American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Rochelle is looking for volunteers and teams to help guide the event to success. Organizers are holding a meeting at 6:00pm on Thursday, January 21st in Rochelle to share with area residents the importance of Relay For Life of Rochelle and the difference it is making in the fight against cancer.
Relay For Life is a fun-filled, overnight event that mobilizes communities throughout the country to celebrate survivors (anyone who has ever been diagnosed with cancer), remember loved ones lost, commit to fight back through healthy lifestyle changes, and raise money for the fight against cancer.
“Relay For Life of Rochelle is an awareness raiser about the progress against cancer as much as it is a fundraiser,” said Beth Kvool 2010 Relay For Life Chair. “Individuals who are willing to give their time and energy to this exciting event - as a volunteer or participant - are making a commitment to fight back against this disease. They are also demonstrating for the community in a very concrete way that cancer can be beat.”
Teams of eight to 15 members gather with tents and sleeping bags to participate in the largest grassroots fundraising event in the nation. Relay For Life brings together people from all walks of life. Teams, made up of friends, families, businesses, hospitals, schools, faith-based groups and other organizations, seek donations and sponsorship prior to the Relay, all with the goal of eliminating cancer.
“The funds raised through Relay For Life events help the Society save lives and create more birthdays,” added Kelly Schultz, your American Cancer Society staff partner. “The need for our support, services and voice has never been greater – and we’re responding. It’s all about saving lives as we help people get well and stay well, find cures and fight back. We are grateful for and moved by the compassion of our volunteers and donors who understand these needs and join us in this mission.”
Volunteers are needed to organize and recruit teams, seek community sponsorships, coordinate logistics, find refreshments and prizes, plan entertainment, and lend their support in a variety of other ways.
If you would like to RSVP for the informational meeting on Thursday, January 21st, volunteer on the Relay For Life of Rochelle committee, or serve as a team captain, contact your American Cancer Society staff partner, Kelly Schultz at 815-229-1287 or visit www.relayforliferochelle.com.
About the American Cancer Society
The American Cancer Society combines an unyielding passion with nearly a century of experience to save lives and end suffering from cancer. As a global grassroots force with more than 100,000 volunteers in Illinois and millions elsewhere, we fight for every birthday threatened by every cancer in every community. We save lives by helping people stay well, by helping people get well, by finding cures and by fighting back. As the nation’s largest non-governmental investor in cancer research, we turn what we know about cancer into what we do. As a result, more than 11 million people in America who have had cancer, and countless more who have avoided it, will be celebrating birthdays this year.
